I really don't think I have a lot to offer the world on travel advice, but as we travelled around Europe for the last two weeks - armed with various "tourist guides" - we found that most tourist guides don't "speak" to us. We aren't the "stand in lines" "get on a shuttle" type of people. We love to discover the quaint and see the "wonders" on our own terms, in an inexpensive way, and without the crowds. As we wander around with the travel books, we do see great sites and get great background, but we tend to put all of our trust in them and when they don't mention or barely discuss a site, we have the tendancy to believe the site must have no value. It is a hard balance between wanting to make sure you see the best without wasting your time on the mediocre and not being led to all the tourist traps of a region. I do think that tourist guides provide a good starting point for travel (especially if you read several different ones so that you get different perspectives). The tourist guides also provide good historical background for sites that you visit so that when you visit a significant site, you don't necessarily need to pay for the guide to tell you things that you can just as easily read.
The purpose of this blog is to share with others our experience. If you ever travel in the same places, we hope that our insight and experiences can help you make the best travel decisions.
So - let's travel!
